Advanced Manufacturing and Adaptive Processes Lab

Current Projects

CONnected Flexible dIGital hybrid additive manufacturing Unit designed for REpair (CONFIGURE)

This industry led project brings together industrially proven welding, inspection and automation technology, together with the latest digital manufacturing methods, in a revolutionary approach which will enable high value components to be repaired in remote, difficult to access and sometimes hazardous locations. The flexible repair unit developed as part of the project will be able to be deployed remotely, including a mobile configuration, allowing it to be positioned precisely where it is required. This will form a platform for future autonomous repair systems. This represents a step change in Hybrid AM technology in terms of part scale, flexibility and level of automation.

“Localisation and characterisation of fan damage using passive acoustics technique”
(Undergraduate TPD Project)

Locating and characterising damage on fan blades of a gas turbine engine is critical in the aerospace industry to ensure safe operation. Two MEng students’ group projects investigate automated methods for locating and classifying fan blade damage during the engine’s operation using passive acoustic techniques. Signal processing and machine learning approaches were developed to process the acoustics data from a diffuse-field microphone. The laboratory tests have shown that the post-processing techniques can be used to detect and locate to the vicinity of a single fan blade and to characterise certain types and severity of damage.

Robust Intelligent Metrology

Current Projects

Collaborative Metrology

This project addresses on how multiple measurements and sensor systems can be combined to provide enhanced metrology systems. The project has focused on the use of optical sensors that can be robot mounted for inspection of complex objects within a manufacturing environment. Robot mounted high resolution surface inspection and metrology, and coordinate metrology are both considered.

Large Area Surface Inspection

This project focuses on providing automatic part inspection systems that combine speed, flexibility, and resolution; allowing small features (such as scratches etc) to be detected on larger complex part surfaces. Issues related to sensor and robot integration are considered, speed optimisation, and robust data processing using machine learning and AI.

In-Jet Interferometry

This project is focused on creating new robust fibre-based sensors, which are optimised for use in challenging dirty in-process manufacturing environment. The sensor technology underdevelopment can be integrated within small liquid jets to allow both metrology and surface cleaning to be competed in a single step.

Large Volume Metrology for Human-Robot Interaction Zones

This project is integrating a framework of large volume metrology systems, to provide a common platform to provide robust digital models of complex manufacturing cells that are designed to enable closer and more effective human with robot collaborative working. The team is addressing issues related to the practical deployed of the technology, routes to verifying and quantifying system performance for traceability and certification of safety systems, and architectures for fast and efficient storage and processing of the acquired data.
